I am wanting a workshop stool without wheels and with an adjustable-height seat, preferably adjustable with a screw mechanism. I need something sturdy, but don't want to spend too much. Lee Valley sells the screw mechanism for $60-something. Right now I am thinking I will order this and build a stool, but to be honest building stools is not my idea of a fun project at the moment. Is there a better alternative that is not too much more expensive? I have seen the offerings at Lowes, Home Depot and the first page of google hits and am not impressed.

You might consider buying an office chair that has the gas strut underneath for height adjustment. They're a commodity thing, so you can get them very cheap -- Costco and the like. They usually come knocked down in a box, and the buyer bolts the back assembly and arms assembly to the seat. If you just pitch those parts away, you have a height-adjustable stool. How 'bout this? http://www.amazon.com/Vibrant-Chrome-Computer-Tractor-LF-214-BLK-GG/dp/B001BX7184/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325087355&sr=8-1 $35!

I'd try to search out a piano stool. Check CL in your area and if you don't find one, put in a wanted to buy ad.

I am pretty set on the screw adjustment because in the building I work in there is an entire room of these chairs that have been rendered useless because the gas mechanism no longer adjusts.

You might want to consider a drum throne. I use one in my shop. Mine is not screw adjustable, it's the carriage bolt and wing nut but I hardly ever adjust the height anyway.

If you can't find a drum throne that fits your butt and your needs your aren't looking. They come in just about every configuration man has the mind to concoct.

Are these drum throne seats sturdy? How tall do they come? A quick google search reveals what look to be mostly short.

You can easily find poor quality drum thrones. But the better built ones are designed to take a pounding.:D

Not sure what your intended use is, but I noticed a pneumatic stool/chair with a bicycle seat at Harbor Freight last week. I didn't closely inspect, but caught my eye as I was in a hurry. A quick look seemed like it was pretty well constructed and sturdy. Nice bicycle seat. I noticed it is on sale for $79 in last flyer. I think I will take a closer look with thoughts of purchasing one for myself.

i know you said no wheels but i guess you could remove them or build some kind of a base?
this stool from HF is incredibly comfortable, if you have a store nearby you should check it out.

Thanks for the advice. I ended up ordering this:

I am going to build one. I may even build it out of the same ash I am using for my new workbench so it will match.
