Wenge and Maple

Made a Maple Bowl wit an accent of Wenge wood. One turned out fine but second when I applied the finish black marks showed up in the Maple. Any ideas on how to eliminate the black areas?:mad:

I'm guessing you're talking about endgrain clouding up. Usually the best ways to deal with it are lots of sanding and a coat of shellac before your finish. That way the endgrain doesn't soak up more than the rest of the piece.

Yes was the end grain.

I call that bruising. If you can see it when fine finish sanding you can minimize it with a light finishing cut. Otherwise, you must rotary or hand sand away. For me, it is always worst on the bowl id.

Looks to me like that end grain tear out, and the dark stripes being the sanding dust from the dark wood filling into the tearout of the lighter wood.

To me it looks like cross contamination from the wenge. May need to try to sand seperately, and when applying finish you need to seal the endgrain of the maple first. Can be done with CA glue or a sanding sealer.
