I few months ago, I bought an old Union No. 6 plane for $10. I figured for $10, I couldn't go too far wrong, but I just stashed it away, figuring to do some research and, if it seemed worthwhile, to restore it. Larry McGarrah's thread about a No. 7 Union plane prompted me to dig it out, and I discovered something surprising (at least to me). The blade is marked D.R. Barton. I've had D.R. Barton chisels and draw knives, but plane irons? Anyone ever seen one before? Was there any connection between Union planes and D. R. Barton?

They made cutters for wooden planes. All union planes cutters were marked union. It is a replacement... Is it straight or tapered?

It's shaped like the old style Stanleys, Type 5 and earlier, before they moved the circular hole to the bottom. But thicker than the Stanleys.
