I never thought I would ever name a piece, but it's Christmas Eve so why not. This form by Terry Scott was my inspiration.

My basic design concept was a calabash style bowl, that rocked freely and that was about it. This is the last piece of $3 cherry burl I have (lower right), all I have left is the $10 piece (back row).

Sanded to 320 and a single coat of shellac.

That is a cool piece Nate. I can see a little pucker factor in that one. Really nicely done.

You're really stepping it up Nate! What are the dimensions and finish. Those are great!!

Thanks Jim, 6" dia x 3" tall. Finish is shellac. Haven't decide if I'm going to make it shiny or not.

Great work on that one, Nate! I think a matte finish would suit it better. BTW, you got a great deal on all those burls.

Totally agree with the matte finish, I'm thinking Tung Oil rubbed back to matte. What I found interesting about the two burls in front and the last burl I bought was that no one wanted them. Guess you can't judge a burl by it's cover.:D

Merry Christmas to you and Mrs K.

Neat piece, Nate! Another three bucks well spent! I did a piece a while back with a similar shape on the top... I'll see if I can dig up a photo or two since I thought I had already posted it. I wonder how the piece would look if the entire edge was gnarly, natural edge?

I agree with your plan for a softer finish, but I think that wood will look good with just about anything on it.

@ Alan-Thanks Alan, Merry Christmas to you too.
@ Baxter-I need to make a tool rest stand for off the end of the lathe, I'd like to turn the burl as one piece.
@ DR K.- Would love to see that one you did. Just not right next too mine, don't want your's outshining this one.:D Unfortunately, the way this was cut didn't allow for a ragged edge all the way around.
@ Joe, should I rename it the clam?

Nate - that is an interesting form - and I mean that in a good way! I kinda like the contrast between the natural edge and the turned rim. Gives it a broken pottery feel! I agree that a matte finish would fit this piece well!

@ Joe, should I rename it the clam?
:) Naaa... Collapse is very fitting
