The new Jet 1642 EVS is well on its way. A few quirks I am getting used to but things are starting to flow. Changing to the lower speed belt helped a ton, its so nice being able to go out, cut a few blanks and turn them without having to clip corners to fit the lathe.

Wow Ken, looks to me like you've gone into production. I have the same lathe and agree it is a joy to use.

Ken, you are becoming a bowl making machine!! Glad the Jet is performing well for you - I have enjoyed mine, as well.

There is a few more that are on a bench being sealed that arent pictured. I usually try and get one or two turned before first light. My "season" starts mid february so I got to play now before I hit the road.

One of the things I appreciate most about my Robust!! Looks like you have been very busy! Seeing as how you are in production mode... make sure to throw in a little variety to your blanks. Nothing worse than coming back to your stash 10 months later only to find that you are stuck turning a certain form. Just my experience...

No worries Steve, I have alot of requests for heavy mixing bowl styled items so thats why there is quite a few of that shape. I cut a really nice red oak crotch this morning that is alot different and will be making more of that style for a few days then on to something else LOL!

Ken you are a machine. Can't say as I would have anything turned before first light or the shop vacuumed before 7 am.

Ken,

I see recesses in the bottom for use with chuck. What is your method for remounting and truing up a oval dried bowl for finishing?

Ken Hill

I use my vaccum chuck to hold the bowl, then true the recess, then remount in the chuck.

Thomas, let me add that last season I did all tenon's, pretty easy to true up, but after having several with the recess offer less warping (read from Mr Reeds postings here ) I decided to just switch to the recess all together. There is a center mark inside and out if needed but usually my self centering set up gets me on the mark. There is always some clean up work to re-true the blank but here thats a given. I am anchorsealing the entire blank this year though, which should help with even less movement. The majority of the wood I am turning was winter cut and been down for a year, still green but not slinging water. I have finished turned several pieces that only needed the foot cleaned up after 2 weeks of drying so that the bowl sits level. Turning mostly Oak and Hickory, I have to tend to cracks even when turning so I am not sure how well i can follow Mr Reeds advice on turning to final thickness as much as I would like, but I am working on it haha

Finally got 2 of the 3 series schedules tonight.....as you can see, once I hit the road, there is PLENTY of time for drying! I think I may have 3 weekends off LOL. Looks like I will be in Kentucky....might have to pay Mr Keeton a visit and do some front porch sittin!

Ken, Oakland is about 3 hours west of us, but I would love to have you visit if you can manage it! Let me know if you think it will come together.

It's all good John. I am supposed to be getting a few models of ATV and RUV's in here to take with me each weekend so that I can visit riding areas and write/photograph the models and areas for articles. Thats a huge bonus for me as it adds to the paycheck without costing me extra running. So hopefully I can take a bit of time and visit with folks around teh east coast and maybe do some wood swapping while we are at it!
