Some folks make their rests, some buy. I would like to see options.

Keith Clark industrial strength for sure. I use it all the time. Not a picture of mine but I have the exact same thing.

Similar to a Jeff Nicol rest but homemade with help of outside weld shop, I pre-assembled with bolts then had the welder weld it parts in position. Total cost was probably ~$30.

Edit: After completing mine I put together a tutorial (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?151550-Steady-Rest-Fabrication/page2) for it and it is posted in the articles forum. Go to post #21 and open the PDF file.

Mine is homemade and works ok, but I may still ask Jeff Nicol to build me one of his these days.

216942Here's one I just recently finished building. 1.25" square tubing rolled into a circle for the ring. Very sturdy.

Here's my offering. Loosely based on Dominic Greco's tutorial from WC and 25 or so other pics that I found here and elsewhere on the web. I made the clamps from some thick aluminum I had and the wheels came from Goodwill.

James, Thanks for the great and very detailed tutorial. It is exactly what I am looking to build for my Robust. Since the Robust has a 25 inch swing, would it be better to get a 24 inch ring or a 25 inch ring? I am also wondering if it would be feasible to "open up" a 24 inch ring about three inches to get an effective 25 inch diameter.

Has anyone seen in person and/or used the one that Woodline sells?

http://www.woodline.com/p-2608-steady-rest.aspx

The price is pretty darn good.

Mine is home made and works well when I need it which isn't very often. I turn many forms that are up to 14" deep and just use #4 jaws on my stronghold chuck and haven't had to use this steady but on 3 pieces which had some rot around the tenon that wouldn't allow a good hold.
