From the department of finally getting around to it, I have a couple pieces of finished plywood that were sent by the cabinet manufacturer when they made the mistake of sending cabinets with vinyl side panels for the end of a cabinet run.

Do I need to get a urea resin glue like Unibond or similar? I read some posts on another forum that said using a water based glue like aliphatic resin could cause problems.

Would it be wise to abrade or treat the vinyl sides in any way?

when my cabinets where installed they forgot the end panel similar to your situation. they used contact cement to glue it on.

So we are talking about gluing the ply to the existing vinyl here?

Yes. The cab company supplied finished eighth inch plywood panels and the cabinets have fake wood vinyl sides.
