From some old oak rafters. Frame and panel sides, with some "Store-bought" 1/3" plywood panels. Lid is just five boards, glued up into a panel. Dark Walnut stain. Inside left unfinished, smells better that way.216713216714216715216716216717216718Will be putting some varnish on today, Delivery is Saturday.

Two coats are on. Remember, other than that "store-bought" plywood, the rest of the wood is from an old garage that fell down. Imagine rafters miled from White Oak..... 21687821687922" high, by 18" deep, by 27" wide. Table in the back ground ( also a Christmas present) was cobbled up using a single plank for the top(not counting the bread board edges) that came from an old plank that was 13-1/2" wide. Been a busy little Elf this year......

The kid actually played INSIDE this little box, they had the lid leaning back against a wall so that it would not shut. Dark stain is what they wanted for a finish. There is TWO old cut nails in the lid. I found them the hard way, with my block plane. Oh well, needed sharpened anyway. I did have to look through the stack of plywood panels at menards, just to find grain that was close to what the rest of my wood looked like. I made most of the parts out in my freezing shop (no heat) and then brought back all the parts to the house, sort of like a "kit". I then assembled the kit, and added a finish. "Store-bought" items for this: 1 24"x 48" x 1/4" oak plywood panel, two steel hinges, 1 pint of Minwax Dark Walnut stain, 1 pint minwax gloss poly. Screws and nails were already at hand, as well as the sandpaper. Glue was just some Elmer's glue.

Nice looking chest; lots of character in the wood.
