This is my first NE bowl, it's a dogwood root burl from my front yard, the top was broken by a wind storm. It's approximately 5.5" diameter by 3.5" high by 1/4" thick. Finished with spray-on poly then buffed.

All comments welcome, especially suggestions for improvements for my next one!

Thanks,
Dale

Yea for Dogwood and VA... beautiful... I wondered how you found such a large piece..almost all dogwood I encounter struggles to reach 3-4 inches in diameter

Dale, that is a beautiful and quite rare piece. You can't just google dogwood burl and order a chunk, especially one that is as solid as that...you did a super job, I like it alot...and am a big fan of dogwood.
I have a dogwood tree right outside our kitchen window, about 10" diam and covered with burls. I love the tree...but will hope for something as nice at what you have here when it does shed it last leaves.

Dale, that's a beautiful bowl.
We have a large Dogwood in the front yard with a burl on it. When I pointed out the burl to my wife, she said "keep your chainsaw away from that tree"

Dale as been said that's one sharp bowl. I have a number of dogwood on my place, but they don't seem to want to get big enough for me to cut up and turn.:(

Absolutely georgous, you've done that piece of wood proper. I wouldn't do anything different.

Sorry you lost the dogwood tree, but you sure gained a beautiful bowl in the process! What a great job on your first NE bowl.

I have never seen Dogwood burl of that size - spectacular piece of wood and you did do a lovely job with the turning and finish. I am far from any type of expert on shapes, but to my eye, a bit more rounding and narrower base might enhance it a bit. Having said that, it is very pleasing as it is.

I've not before seen a dogwood burl either, and it's a beauty! But is this example piece as dark as it appears, or did the finish make it darker? I do know that pink dogwood is darker than white dogwood, but the pink in the wood is not very lightfast.

Dale, great piece of burl for your first NE!!! And, great job with the turning and finishing. I like the form, but probably would have liked a little smaller (not much) base. Nonetheless, excellent piece!

Great piece of burl. I run upon Dogwood all the time. Don't find any with burls on it though.(Not yet anyway).

Man, that's a fantastic piece of wood and a great job on the bowl! You might try shrinking the foot on the next one to about 30-40% of the max diameter and see how you like the look... I tend to be drawn toward smaller bottoms, and others might disagree with that suggestion. I have major burl envy... I'm considering a midnight raid outside Tim's kitchen window!

Outstanding work Dale. It’s not going to be easy to topthat. From your front yard really makes it special.

Love the way that turned out. The natural edge is just awesome, especially with those stripes running down it. I had no idea dogwood looked like that turned.

Wonderful wood and rim. I would say that the foot could be a little smaller, but when I look at this one, the size doesn't bother me in the least. Dale, you are going to have a tough time ever topping your first NE bowl.
