This little cherry burl was a cast-off that I got from Kyle Edwards (Sawmill NC) when I picked up the box elder root burl in other posting today. He had some little pieces that were just sitting there rotting in the field and offered them to me, so I took this little piece, not much bigger than a softball, and studied it for about an hour just trying to figure out how to chuck it. I should have taken pics...it didn't show much promise. The piece is 4.5" wide and about 3.5" tall, finish is antique oil or danish oil..can't remember now, this was done a couple months ago. If you look closely near the top, are a couple small areas of amber that really look cool close up, like gems in the void. I added a very subtle amount of inlay of malachite and even some copper filing, just enough to add interest without getting carried away. Comments welcome.

Tim, that looks great. Hard to believe that somebody was "throwing" that away.

Great shape and great wood Tim. Nothing against your photo skills, but I would like to see this one in a little more natural light!:)

A really nice piece Tim. I agree with Baxter, a little brighter picture would be nice.

I'll see what I can do, wasn't crazy how this turned out...why I don't post more pics, never truly happy with how most of them come out.

now this is wonderful, the little inlay is very bashful & seems right it is there, quietly doing it's thing! What a super little piece

thanks Michelle, I didn't want to go overboard with inlay and detract from how nice the natural voids look.
Here's some better pics I just took outside...

I guess that one had a little pucker factor while turning!

Gotta love the "throw away burls". I picked up two more at the turners guild this month. Nice job on the inlay, it's just the right amount and the finish is perfect

The natural lighting really shows it off quite well. The inlay is perfect - just a touch of color - and the rim is elegant.

You are lucky to have survived! Cool little chunk-o-cherry and the inlay is a sweet touch!

Another nice piece, Tim!! This is a "Keller burl" - full of holes!

Pretty cool looking burl there Tim! Very nice work on the form and I like how the embellishments were minimal. Sure is a big difference in lighting between the two sets of photos.... gives you something to play with for next time. Have fun!!

That looks a lot more like the cherry burls that grow around here Tim!;) The little touch of blue is kind of neat!

Fantastic! I love the little bit of malachite and copper... Just enough! I was surprised to see the little collar detail in the outdoor photos as it doesn't show as well in the first shots... I'm still thinking on that little detail, but I think I like it. Great looking little form!
