Hi, I have a question about finishing boards near the floor of my shop. I think this piece of wood came out of a cold storage in the 70's and was sawn into planks and is now at the floor in my shop... Could it be douglas fir? Anyway I am thinking a very dark stain with poly over the top. Im am sanding with 60 grit... If it is Doug fir will it take stain well? Also the pine beadboard will stay natural and get poly over it Suggestions for technique are more than welcome.....

Thanks,

Michael

Looks like doug fir... might be hemlock.

Being either one, no, they don't take stain well - the grain reverses. I would go for BLO and then poly it.

Thanks for the idea, I always forget about BLO and what great results you can get with it.

I would just poly it. Poly has trouble sticking to surfaces treated with BLO.
