Looking at this lathe. Can anyone see an issue with getting the 1.5 HP vs the 2hp. I can get a great deal on the 1.5 HP scratch and Dent... The other option is getting the powermatic 3520A. The wife has given me the go ahead on either.

Can't give an opinion on the Jets, but I love my 3520A. You might look at Dominic Greco's article about his Jet 1642/1.5 hp from a couple of years ago.

I've had a 1442 which was pretty good, and I assume the 1642 is a very good lathe based on that, however my 3520 is great and you will always want that extra 4" even though you may not turn anything that large very often.

I purchased a 1.5 hp and it does everything (and more) than I expected. It is a "great lathe". I second the idea of reading
Dominic Greco's 1642VS Review (http://www.sawmillcreek.org/articles/6/)

Picked up the lathe at lunch time. The wife, my 9 yr old son and I got it out of the truck and into the shop. Very scary..... Well like I said it is in the shop but no it is not completely set up yet. I had to go back to work and no time this evening. I am getting some tools tomorrow morning and should have it up and running by noon.... Great thing is I got it for a steal. The store I bought it from is selling to a new owner and was willing to sell it to me just above cost. I paid 1500.00 for it. Not too bad if I do say so my self. Cheapest I could find a new one on the net was 1746.00

Great score on the new lathe for that price Greg. Also, your nine year old must be pumping iron a lot if he was able to move that puppy to the garage for you. ;)

Yea he is pumping Iron.... Cast Iron... He is my little helper. Always ready when I need him.

I just got the lathe set up and it seems to run nice and smooth. played with it for about 30 mins. I need to sharpen my new tools to really tell how well it is running. So far so good.
