I can get a Rikon lathe Model 70-100 for 175.00 looks pretty much untouched is this a good lathe to start on for pens and small objects I currently use a shopsmith.

Hard to beat that for the price. A nice little lathe. I still have mine and altho' I don't use it any more, I turned a bunch of stuff on it and wouldn't hesitate to go back to it if the need arose. It doesn't have VS or reverse, two cons for sure, but not a dealbreaker, at least for me.

That will be a HUGE step up from your SS. Even if you lose 4" of turning diameter. Yes, I do have a SS.

I graduated from the SS to a jet mini for turning a few years ago. Getting on a "real" lathe feels totally like turning unlike the SS.

Well thank you all for your input and I will be picking up my new addition tomorrow and the shop smith will become my drill press :D. Is there anything special I should look for before paying for this, I know it must turn on and off but other then that any advise to make sure it is not a lemon being passed off.
