I picked up a Stanley no 40 scrub plane to restore as a gift. For my own use, I likely wouldn't have gone quite as far. The japanning wasn't in really good shape, so I stripped it all the way down and repainted it. I refinished the knob and tote, and gave the sole and iron a good workin' up. I like the way it turned out. The wood parts are beech, with the very nice early knob, which I really like. Here's the before and after.

What did you do for the Japanning?

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. I saw that plane and knew it had potential. I haven't heard of scrub planes being very collectible, even an SW, so I didn't have an issue with stripping it. I know that's a big no-no sometimes.
McKay, the new coating is actually a two part poly. It's a very durable finish. Maybe not as tough as japanning, but it's up there. I've considered learning how to do japanning, though. I've seen a recipe or two out there and have though about giving it a shot.
Most of the time, when I see SW stuff, I tend to keep it for myself. This one seemed like a good gift idea. I don't know exactly why, but I have a fondness for SW. I have a panel saw, spoke shave, square, and a few other odds 'n ends, but this was the first plane I found.

Trust me, Bill, when I start down that road, I'll be sharing here.
