Wings on a gouge???

How does one grind these wings on a gouge and what determines the angle of them?:confused: Do you just leave the side of the gouge on the grinder wheel longer?

Dwight - the wings are actually formed when rotating the gouge through the grind. The angle or length of the wings are totally up to the user. Here is a short video - once you get by the promo stuff - that actually shows the wings of a gouge being formed when using the Wolverine jig.

Before grinding the wings to sharpness you need to shape the profile. The length of the side grinds is up to you. Some grind them back to an inch or so, others much less than that. The profile should be straight or slightly convex. Never concave.

Lay the gouge on the grinder tool rest with the flute down. Shape the profile carefully. Then put the gouge in the jig as shown in John's video and grind the the side grinds along with the nose. Nose angle is up to you. Can run from 40 degrees to 65. It's personal preference. I grind my 5/8th gouges at 60 degrees and smaller bowl gouges at 45.
