Hi folks,

Haven't been here in awhile because I don't turn that often. My wife asked me (for years) to make some wooden fruit. I had some free time and enough inspiration the other day to go try making some, and here's what I got for my effort. I have to say, they were a lot of fun to make. All but one of the pears were mahagony, dyed with Transtint and sprayed with lacquer; the one pear was English walnut with Arm-R-Seal. Thanks for looking. Have a great Holiday season. John

The fruit looks great as does the bowl. I particualary like the stems on the fruit.
The bowl looks like Osage with a (Mahagony?) rim.

Beautiful work! It doesn't seem the paucity of turning time has effected your skills at all!

Great job. You might want to put a note by them stating they are not real......some one might make the mistake.

Wow, those look great. I really like the stem detail. I have not seen very many stems as effective as those! The bowl looks thin and crisp too.

Thanks for all the kind words, everyone. I'm not used to such praise on some of the other forums, so I guess I should turn more stuff so I can hang out here more often ! You all definitely made my day.

Glad you liked the stems. They were actually very easy to make. I took a piece of 1/4" dia. dowel rod (one is 3/8", but I thought it looked a little large) and tapered it down to a little less than 1/8" dia. with a chisel over about 1-1/4" to 1-1/2" in length. I sanded it a little, then cut it off on an angle at the bandsaw and sanded that surface and slightly rounded the edge. I drilled a 1/8" hole into the top of the fruit at an angle of 10 - 15 deg. so that the stem would look natural. I stained them with GF's Java wiping stain, then glued them into the fruit before I shot them with lacquer.

thanks,
John

John, great fruit and bowl as well. at first glance I thought the one pear looked a little more ripe than the other.

For not turning often, they sure look edible John. The bowl will still look good when they are gone too!;):)
