View Full Version : Verizon Kicks It Up A Notch...

While I'm anxiously awaiting Verizon's FIOS (fiber to the prem) service, hopefully sometime this year, they are once again offering and promoting a higher-speed DSL service to non-business users who are willing to make an annual commitment. I clicked on the button yesterday and went from 1.5mbps down/128kbps up to this...now, if only the various servers I use out there would cooperate! Ten bucks a month more than the slower speed rate I had and still less money than cable too...(with supposedly similar speeds downstream, at least). I'm a happy camper! If you are a Verizon DSL user, check out their new lower rates for a one year committment. (Three different test servers shown)

I guess I still need to stay with cable as it's 3mgs:) I'm not sure that I'm computor literate enough to understand the difference. But my son is on dsl and is running @1500 and he works for the phone company. You must be out in the country a little?

Jim, this is actual throughput...which is different than the "service speed you are buying" no matter what the service. The same holds true even on the wired Ethernet or wireless network you may have in your home...your actual throughput will not be 10mb or 54mb or 100mb, etc. I also haven't made any adjustments to some of the networking parameters of the computers yet...a little tweeking can sometimes improve throughput when you get certain things optimized for the actual network you are on. What I'm getting now is more than double the performance I was for downstream and a big kick on the upstream side...the latter especially nice for both business and personal email.

Ted...your cruzin'!

I've tried em all and cable has been berry berry good to me. I'm almost always around 4000 kpbs up and 1000 kpbs down. For some reason we are a little slow on the up take here in Rhode Island to night...maybe it's the weather and everyone is cruisin'? They are offering 5000 kpbs for 10 bucks...but I don't think I need it.

Jim,

I think that whoever brings fiber to the home first will be the big winner, maybe bigger than anyone knows. The download caps are to keep people from running servers as you well know but I would be elated to be able to purchase a commercial account via fiber transmission and move the SMC server to my shop office. Man that would be just awesome but we need a dedicated CIR of 3 mbps which would give us room to grow.

Cox Cable has a Commercial cable Internet account for $300.00 per month but the upstream cap is 384k which isn't enough to host SMC. Verizon is a surprise, I always thought that the power companies would be the first to the finish line with fiber to the home.

I just wish I had ANY option for high speed connection. I had high hopes for BPL but my electric company informed me that they are not even considering it. I guess here in the boonies people prefer things slow. That would be fine if I hadn't lived with a cable modem for several years before.

But, that's cool for you Jim. Always exciting to get new technology.

Keith,
We have fiber here...Cox...cable/telephone/broadband. But we're capped at the level that we pay for.

I think that whoever brings fiber to the home first will be the big winner, maybe bigger than anyone knows. .I agree totally...and have it from a "secret source" (who is also an SMC member) that FIOS is due in my area this year. There has to be thousands of strands of fiber on the poles in front of the house already, anyway...might as well use it! Verizon will likely have business offerings on the fiber service the same as they do for DSL. You might also look into some of the newer IP offers from other carriers, such as AT&T and MCI. They are changing all the time.

I checked me results vs others in this area and I'm getting about the same throughput as others with the 3mb Verizon service. DSL, being what it is, is affected by distance and it's unlikely anyone will get the max unless they are literally right next to the CO...and even then, who knows?!

I suspect Jim B. would be up to speed on this. What's the take on WiMax? Supposedly a wireless networking standard that would work over a several mile radius instead of 100 feet or so. Seems like that might have the potential to replace cable, DSL and cell phone infrastructure.

Curt

Curt, I'm not all that familiar with WiMax as I work on Enterprise stuff, not carrier, but I believe there was some commentary on it not long ago on another forum that was not overly positive. If I recall clearly, the fellow worked for a company/provider and said it was a royal pain...or something to that effect! (WiMAx is a fixed wireless offering that is typically deployed for community-based wireless Internet access systems--I do not believe it has any applicability to phone service or video)

Jim,

Verizon came through our area and punched fibre through the right-of-way between the sidewalk and street in the entire subdivision. As a result, I'm scheduled to have Verizon's FIOS installed a week from tomorrow (if I can keep from getting sent out of town that day). 15Mbps download and I'm not sure what the upload rate will be, and $10 per month less. I'm sure that at these data rates the actual throughput will be bottlenecked in some other area of the www (backbone at the Verizon ISP, router, or website server). I have seen and used a computer (at my sister-in-laws) that was connected on this network and it is fast. They put a box in at the point of presence and it seems that they then convert the home phone service into VOIP at the box while puting the network traffic on the same line (all speculation on my part at this time). I will try to get more details when when they do the install. I will also let you know how it works.

As an interresting note, I'm currently on Comcast cable and they recently increased the amount of bandwidth that they allocated to each subscriber in our area. Compettion is a good thing.

If anyone is technically inclined about their computer I would not recommend that they let the Verizon installer load any software or drivers on their computer. When they installed the system for my sister-in-law they completely crashed one of her W2K boxes trying to install a Dlink USB based wireless adapter (I spend the many hours weekend before last fixing their mess). They also left the wireless access point wide open with the default SSID, no WEP, and the default administration passwords. (Don't want to pay for the neighbors to get free internet).

You are a lucky dawg Jim! We have Verizon here too, but it was Commonwealth Telephone before we were absorbed by Verizon. Neither did anything for us in the way of modern communications. Why, I have to plug my modem cable into this!

They put a box in at the point of presence and it seems that they then convert the home phone service into VOIP at the box while puting the network traffic on the same line (all speculation on my part at this time).Correct. The fiber to the prem replaces your previous copper connection to the CO. The ONT (Optical Network Terminal) is installed on or in your home and the fiber is run from the street to it. Circuitry in the ONT converts your phone line(s) back to copper and provides a network drop to the required Verizon-supplied router for your Internet access. Battery backup is also part of the package with a projected two-year life for the batteries..."your" responsiblity to replace when necessary. Verizon also plans to enter the media market with video/TV offerings at a later date. Once everything is working...they actually remove the old copper multi-pair cable to the street if it's an overhead wire.

Here's how the speeds work out:

There are three tiers of Verizon FiOS Internet service for consumers:
5 Mbps downstream and 2 Mbps upstream. Suited for Internet surfing and basic computer functions. $34.95 a month as part of a calling package, or $39.95 a month stand-alone.
15 Mbps downstream and 2 Mbps upstream. Appealing to families that have multiple computers and various needs such as media downloads and the ability to access or share large files. $44.95 a month as part of a calling package, or $49.95 a month stand-alone.
30 Mbps downstream and 5 Mbps upstream. Designed for communications-intensive power users with significant bandwidth needs, such as telecommuters or work-at-home households and avid online gamers. $179.95 a month as part of a calling package, or $199.95 a month stand-alone.

Like others, I'm out in the boonies. Since I telecommute I have to have something better than dial-up, so my Internet traffic is beamed into space and back over a satellite connection.:(

I have a friend in Lucas, TX who has told me Verizon is installing fiber to the house. I think the biggest package is supposed to give him 66 MB/s speeds. This is all hear-say, so if that's technically impossible don't blame me.:D

WiMax isn't taking off like they had hoped. Originally designed for mobile applications, they found it's not really good at roaming...so someone decided to try using it in a fixed marketplace where fiber to the home is difficult. It was seen as a godsend for rural areas, some mountainous regions, etc..

Major carriers have jumped on the WiMax bandwagon, started an initial rollout, and jumped off after all the problems. Given the relative success of EVDO and the realization that 50+mbps to the home isn't really necessary (yet), I suspect WiMax will get tabled or become a foundation for something that's cheaper, easier to deploy, and has more potential of multi-protocol delivery with multiple vendors.

Here in Western MD farm country we were lucky to get cable service on our road 3 yrs ago... LOL
They offered cable modem which I jumped on like a dog on a bone.. downloads were in the 3Mb area consistently.. then all of a sudden they dropped to the 1.6Mb zone.. took me 2 months of phone calls to get someone to give me an answer.. they decided to cap the download speed without telling the customers. When a bunch of us complained, we were told... "We are the only broadband service you can get.. take it or leave it... "... I am too far out to get DSL... so for now I have to take it..
But Verizon is in the process of running fiber optic and we should have it sometime this summer... wanna guess what I am going to tell the cable company then... LOL.. will proabably also go back to satellite for my TV also since I can now get local channels on it... every time a squirrel runs on the wires here our cable goes out... LOL.. OH the joys of a NYC boy living in the country.. LOL... talk about techno shock...LOL

I was in the Central office testing Fios the other day at 30mbps. All I can say is wow! We were downloading 90 mb videos in like 4 seconds. The people are buying the service and many can't seem to wait to get away from the cable company. I'm just a little miffed that my town was on the schedule to have the FTTP this year and it was taken off the table because of local politicians. We are having trouble with alot of the municipalities. People are complaining about fiber hub placement and seeing us working in their neighborhoods everyday. You can't figure people out. They complain about the old cruddy cables and now they complain when we are replacing them with the best thing going. By the way I work for Verizon. I'm just a grunt and just build the network I don't get to make the decisions about where and why they do stuff. I'm excited about this service from a customer standpoint more than anything. If I seem like I'm hawking the service I apologize it's more from a customer standpoint than anything.

I sure wish Verizon would bring fiber to my area. Right now I'm using their DSL and the best speeds I can get are around 680 down and 100 up. I know that's not too good, but it's maybe a bit better than satellite and WAY better than dial-up, so I'm happy enough.

The city I live in is in the process of installing a wireless system on the street lights. It's supposed to have a range of 300 yards and download speeds of 2000 or so. They haven't set the price yet, but the talk is that it will be $19.95/mo. It should be ready to go sometime this month. I'm going to give it a try even though I have some reservations about security.
