The Squirrels putting up their tree.

Unfortunately I didn't have a camera with me so I will have to show a picture from a few years back.

The Nutty Narrows Bridge was built in 1963 by a local builder, the late Amos Peters, to give squirrels a way to cross the busy thoroughfare without getting flattened by passing cars.

We haven't had snow yet this year. Maybe this week end.

Anything on the strange side in others localities to mark the arrival of Christmas?

Maybe I will make some eggnog.

Didn't they put up a new fancy bridge this year?

I think that was last year.
I think it was moved closer to its original site.
The bridge needs repairs every few years.

Here is the story from the local paper:

"Peters died in 1984, and the 10-foot wooden squirrel statue placed nearby on the Library grounds was dedicated in his memory."
The article mentions this lasting monument to man/rodent cooperation.

Back here, on the Other Coast, we take a different view (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5A-7g-fl3g8&feature=related) of the situation.

My wife is convinced they're out to get her, them and the moths after her knitting.

We have a small Red Squirrel that stacks apples in the crotch of one of our apple trees. The apples are almost as big as the squirrel. When the squirrel population gets over 8 I live trap them and transport them to the near by Forest. In the past 10 years I have moved over 200 critters of all kinds. They are sure entertaining.

When we lived in California it seemed there was one squirrel that would throw walnuts at me when I was in the yard.

I wonder how many have just come right back...

This isn't regional, but to me nothing says Christmas like going to a store like, say, Michael's or Home Goods and seeing all of the bored and put upon men who are there in support of their women. It just warms my heart! I also braved the mall (something I would rather not do) . . . screaming babies, families that mosey instead of walking, men who looked ready to cry . . . ahhhh Christmas!

On a different note, I was extremely disappointed to discover that Books-A-Million has closed.

We get that way, when we must choose one flavor of "soap on a rope". A fella shouldn't have to settle for just one, we like variety!

What Irks me, is our town has announced the date/time they will be politically correct, and ceremonially lighting the "HOLIDAY TREE".. I will be boycotting this event, unless of course they can name something other than Christmas, that uses a 'Tree' this time of year.. Hmmph.. Welcome to Canada, here's your cheque, and what can we change for you now?

There is good reason to believe that Christ was actually born in the spring.

If you look into the history of the tree and celebrations at this time of year you will find some early religions celebrated the return of the sun at this time of year and the tree was a vital part of their celebrations.

It was adopted by early Christians to help ease others into "the new religion."

There is a similar origin to Easter.

On a side note Bill, the first time I saw your picture my reaction was, "what is my oldest brother doing here?" You and he look a lot alike. Your opinions are similar.

My thought is to not get upset by people saying Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I do get kind of grumpy when I see Merry Xmas. It is one thing to say something different, it is another for them to be too lazy to add a few more letters.

I know there are those who want to promote a phony "War on Christmas." Those people just want to get people riled up over nothing.

My MIL had an elderly friend that would trap them, put a blanket over the cage, put it in the trunk of her car and take a circuitous route to the park so as to confuse them so they couldn't find their way back. I don't think it worked.

The squirrels down here have no better sense of traffic signals than the Massachusetts drivers - some mornings look like a backlot Zombie movie.

“When I was a child, adults would tell me not to make things up, warning me of what would happen if I did.
As far as I can tell so far, it seems to involve lots of foreign travel and not having to get up too early in the morning.”
― Neil Gaiman (http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/1221698.Neil_Gaiman), Smoke and Mirrors (http://www.goodreads.com/work/quotes/6277491)

I quote Neil Gaiman because his vision of Hell involves being caught up in a room with a squirrel that can't stop talking.

Ever read this one Jim? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Good_Omens A collaboration between Neil Giaman and Terry Pratchett. Sorry, not about Christmas, I know.

Nothing says Christmas like Merry Christmas! There, back on topic! :D

I have no problem with the 'Happy Holidays' phrase, because other holidays are celebrated during this period. But a TREE is only associated with 'one' holiday in North America, and that's Christmas. I just get irked at the politically correct 'progressives' that have no problem dumping historical traditions in case they offend someone new to the country. The silly part is, the new people are not the ones causing the discord. It's some home grown socialists that think their doing the right thing..
By the way Jim, your oldest brother is obviously a smart good looking fellow eh!
