Well it's almost done. Could use a little knocking down of the Krylon and another coat. I have picked up a lot of pointers and will incorporate into the next one. Some big red rubber bands arrived and I ordered 18" flat leg calipers.(my latest contribution to the vortex)

This morning, the recipient of the hat was at the restaurant next door so I brought it over to show him and it actually fit so I am considering this as mission accomplished. One thing I didn't do was place additional rubber bands around the front to give it a little taper and will on the next one. Any suggestions or tips would be appreciated.

These hats are really cool, nice job.
The wood looks great, like the upper parts grain.

Good luck on your next one.

Looks like you have been turning hats for years! Very nice work and the recipient must be thrilled with it!! Looking forward to seeing the next one!!

Makes me wish I was in the restaurant next door! I think it turned out beautifully! I think I prefer a little less shiny finish, so your plan to knock it back sounds like a good one. Thanks for the inspiration!

Thanks for all the nice comments. My head might just fit that size 8-1/8!! I consider myself lucky that it came out reasonably well. The new owner is one of the morning coffee guys in the restaurant next door and I showed them progress from first turned, to in the bender, to finished.

Keller, that would be cool if you showed up in the restaurant, but before you can sit at the morning coffee table I think someone has to die first. I have special status and even though I only go in there once or twice a week I can take someone's seat and they "get over it"

I will take better records and photo's of the next one so a tutorial might be possible. I gleaned all the info off of several sites and mostly on Johannes Michelsens websites. Thanks again for the nice comments.

This is still amazing, even though I saw my first mini-hat turned years ago, and like Thom, wish I could make one... Good job on the hat- especially since it fits!
