I just received a Beall polishing kit. My question is this:

When do you polish? Say for example I turned a cherry peppermill and was planning on using some Watco dark walnut, oil based stain on it, would I stain it before or after polishing? I ask because if it is first polished, then the pores are more closed and it shouldn't absorb the stain as readily. If I stain first, won't the polishing remove the stain?

I sand and buff the bare wood up to the White Diamond before applying a finish. The buffing really cleans up the piece, burnishes the wood and highlights any imperfection you might have missed. The goal is to finish the wood not the finish. I rarely stain a piece, but wouldn't think buffing would actually remove the stain.

I do all my buffing after it is finished.

For me, buffing is the last step in the process. When it's buffed, it's done.

I could be mistaken, but I believe the Beall is designed to: use danish oil, let it dry, then buff thru the 3 buffing wheeels. Or it can be used to buff out dried lacquer, WOP or such NOT shellac..shellac will melt & gum up the buffers. it is not designed to buff stained surfaces
