Here is a cedar bowl I made from some cedar I aquired about 2 yrs ago. It has been in log form until last Saturday. The cedar log was 15 1/2" in diameter. I tried a different bowl design for me. It was pretty dry but have a crack or two in it on one of the knots. Had some wild color. Finished with Antique Oil. It is 9 1/2" X 3". This thing has some wild color to it. I have I think 4 more blanks from this log.

Very nice Bernie and great color in that wood. I've turned enough cedar to know how cruel it can be to a finished product. Looks as though you may have lucked out though.

That is so red it is almost purple in areas of the grain..............good lookin' stuff! I am surprised you got the AO to shine up that glossy! Did you buff it?

That's a classic form and a good one. Very pretty wood. I lined a chest with red cedar once but I've never had any to turn. I've heard that there can be problems with it.

Out here in the west we've always called that Tennessee cedar. A number of years ago my wife and I were driving around in some of the southern states. While in Tennessee I asked someone about getting some Tennessee cedar. He didn't know what I was talking about. Maybe he didn't understand my yankee accent. On the same trip we were on a back road in N. Carolina. I stopped at a little country store to ask for some directions. When I got back to the car my wife asked what the man had said. My answer was that I had no idea. Too southern for me.

It has nice grain as well as color. Cedar is very popular around here. Suspect it will be there as well. You did a good job with that one. Glad you have some more of it.

Thats beautiful.
I am hoping to cut into my cedar this weekend for the first couple of rough-outs. If I am lucky enough to get half that grain pattern, I will be sure to share!!!!

Very nice Bernie. A great classic shape. I am surprised that you didn't get more cracks. If you look at it cross eyed it will crack.

Thanks to all. This cedar has been a pleasure to turn really. Shop sure does smell nice. I could hear it cracking as I was taking some of the final cuts so stopped and saw the knots were cracking. I soaked them CA and let dry. Took my final cuts and all was well.

Charlie K. I soaked it with the first coat. I just kept adding and adding Antique Oil till it just didn't take anymore. After sitting for 15 minutes I wiped it down. I let dry 24 hrs, used 0000 steel wool and then soaked it again letting it sit 10 minutes or more. Wiped it again, then 24 hrs to dry. I then put the third coat on and this is how it came out. Not real glossy but a nice shine.

Love that bowl and the wood. a question to you and all. how do you keep the stuff from spliting. me and my buds have probably tried 50 pieces over the years and they all crack(as does our southern cherry). if cut into boards it does very well but turn a piece and its almost dangerous. any ideas would really be appreciated.-----------old forester

Love the color and the form. Great job. I've been afraid of cedar, I heard it cracks easy, but apparently you pulled it off.

Thanks again to all.

Robert I don't have much trouble with cedar up here anyway. I do get some that start to crack but if I catch it quickly with CA it can be stopped. Most times on cedar I cut into blanks and then let them set for some time. This one measured with a moisture meter was around 9.5%.

Michelle I normally warn people about that when they buy the piece but I have two pieces that are over 5 yrs old that still have that great cedar color. Bill Grumbine and Al Stirt told me at the Richmond symposium to keep them out of direct sunlight. These are in the wife's display cabinet.

Great looking bowl Bernie. From my experience with cedar, that is very minimal cracking, and the color is exceptional.

Back to the OP .. I love it... When fresh cut and handled properly the purple hue is very common..I dig how you incorporated some of the sapwood too..nicely done
