wooden shotgun carrying case

Hi guys, I'm looking for plans to make a wooden gun carrying case to replace my old one that was just nailed together. I plan to use box joints, but plans for dovetails would be great. I guess if there are any plans for making a lid or case bottom by connecting the four sides to the top or the bottom using good jointery, that would be great. I can make the sides with box joints or dovetails, but I want a nice connection with the top or bottom. Is there a way to say connect four sides and top with box joints.

Myself, I would use dovetails for mechanical joint strength. If you use box joints, I would re-inforce the finished joint by drilling holes to accept glued-in brass pins.

To make the bottom/top secure, cut a grooves on the inside of the sides, front and back to accept the top and bottom, then cut the top/bottom to fit and glue and clamp the whole thing up.

Laying out dovetails is easy --- just make a guide and make a wide pin or tail spanning where you'll cut the lid off.

The problem, as the above thread notes is finding nice enough hardware --- and it's pricey.

Thus far I have:

- medium brass catch from Taiwan
- Windsor Brass butt hinge
- forged brass stay chain from Italy
- sand cast handle from Britain
- brass corner protectors
- Stanley bullet catches
