Just found a lightly used PM 4224. What should I be looking for as far good bad things? It has never turned rough wood. looks new. The price seems good .

Just got a email as I was writing this it is 8yrs old. What price range would you think would be good.

Thanks
Dave

If that is in nearly new condition...........I don't see how you could go wrong..........two years ago it was in the $5k range......that is a fine lathe..........the headstock does not slide to the end, but like the oneway 2436 it is big enough you probably would not use it for anything much bigger than it can handle!

I don't know but I'll trade you 2 JETvs-1442's for it. One is brand new, Just walked in from putting it together a minute ago.:D (Pics tomorrow.)

I will second Roger's comment that the head stock doesn't slide. Other than that, I think its a big ole monster lathe and a good price would be a reason to get one, if the sliding head stock thing doesn't bother you.

On another topic...... BILL, ......2 1442's???? Really??

I haven't priced that particular lathe, but I've had good luck with my mustard(smaller version). I'd probably go no higher than 75% of the cost of new if it was in mint condition... Less if there appear to be blemishes.

Its near 1/2 price of new. Till I got the last email I figured it was 4 or 5 yrs old.

Steve Walker lucked into a 4224 which he seems to enjoy... You might contact him to see what the going rate was when he found his.

My wife bought one 2 years ago. It was in excellent shape and was all tricked out with bed extensions, outboard turning, and a 6' Vega duplicator. She paid $3500 for it. The only problem has been the digital speed readout has been "intermittent". If (when) it needs to be replaced, it will be a $300 plus purchase, unless I can find an after market replacement.

it is a nice lathe, it is older than I thought it was. But I still think it doesnt have 25- 35 hours on it. Tom the deal your wife got makes me think it may not be that good of a deal.

There was one near me a couple of years ago in the Hill Country. He was asking $2200 it was like new. I turned a guy from Dallas on to it and he came down a picked it up. I felt that was a heck of a deal. If I was going to buy a 24" class lathe new it would either be the Vicmarc or a Robust. JMHO.

Dave:

The guy my wife bought the 4224 from was a very motivated seller. The Vega duplicator has not been used and the out board turning capacites have not either.

I don't know if the age is an issue it the tool is in good shape. I think there has only been one model of this lathe since it was introduced. I would rely heavily on appearnace - if it is clean, no signs of abuse, and only cosmetic belms, I would think it will last you a long time.

You creekers that have the Jet 1642 do you all have the 2 hp or the 1 1/2 hp model?

thanks

From prior threads, I'd say quite a mix. Several, like me, bought the 1 1/2hp model because of issues with 220v. No one that bought the 220 has regretted it that I've heard of, and a few with the 120v 1 1/2hp version have upgraded to PM's or even Robust beauties!

My almost put together 1642 is 1 1/2. No way to get 220 out to the shop unless I run it from the pole.
