Mom had a dining room chair that had a broken spindle. "Can you fix this?". I said I will try. Spindle's tenons were both broken off in the chair's legs. I had some old white oak sitting around the shop, time to fire up the lathe for the first time in almost two years.214216214217214218214219Lathe started with a squeal, sprayed that away. That big block of oak in the first picture supplied the blank. The last picture shows the finished spindle back on the chair. Took two tries to get the colour match. Just an old, old Craftsman 5 speed lathe.

Great job and great color match. Do a lot of furniture repair myself and color match of any replacement parts is usually the hardest part.

It looks better in the picture, colour is just a hair off. When a coat of varnish gets on it, should be real close. Thanks to all that looked in on my little project.

Great job Steven. I do a lot of those for a furniture repair store here in town. The hardest part is matching the color.

Steven, that spreader looks like it was there from the get go! Nice work. So......why don't you turn more?? We need to see more from you, and that ol' Craftsman needs the exercise!

Jt will have to wait until spring now. No heat in the pole barn I use as a shop. I do mainly turning between centers, so a table leg or two might show up. That lathe was new back in the 80s, cost a whole $90 back then.
