I am making my first peppermill. I bought a LV 8" model. The instructions are not very clear or my brain is not functioning (maybe both?). The instructions have a diagram. It shows that you first drill a 1 3/4" hole in the bottom to a depth of 9/16". Next you drill the long hole at 1 1/16"

How deep (long) is the 1 1/16" hole? The mill gets a top with a 5/16" hole. How thick (high?) is the top? I guess you can make them however thick you want, but this is me FIRST. I don't need to make decisions on my own for the first one that I make. I can get all creative and artsy later.

For now, how deep with the 1 1/16" and how thick for the top????

The 1 1/16" hole goes thru the entire body. This is the housing for both the grinder shaft and the pepper chamber...hope that makes sense??

I understand that it goes through the entire body, but how tall should the body be? The instructions (http://www.leevalley.com/US/shopping/Instructions.aspx?p=57749) don't say. Again, it is an 8" tall mill so I guess the entire blank should be 8" long. The top should be cut from the 8" How thick (high?) is "normal" for the top?
