Well the morning was consumed by trips to home depot and cleaning up the shop a little. That only left time for two little guys to make it off the lathe.

After the encouragement on the other cherry bowl I gave it another go. I'm much happier with the quality of the work on this one. The tear out is much much less. The shape makes me pretty happy. The foot however looks quite different to me off the lathe. I wish I'd put a deeper curve at the bottom of the bowl and narrowed the top of the foot in. There is a curve to the foot that doesn't come out as well in the pictures but still not as dramatic as I thought it would be.

And this one seems to get a little uglier every time I look at it. The shape is all kinds of wonky. I was mainly playing with making a box and wondered how it would look with a foot. I should have added a little groove at the bottom and left the foot off. Then it would at least look like a .45 acp round.

This will be a great gift for the wife. Anything I make looks great to her and it will be neat cause it opens. Hopefully she won't show anyone else though :D

I do like the grain and coloring here though.

Hey look, even apart they are still weird looking.

Derek those turned out nicely. I agree the box would really look nice without the foot. Bowl looks pretty good. Keep'em coming.

Looking good. If your going to keep with a footed bowl, I don't think your foot size is all that off (as far as size). This bowl has a "rice bowl' look to it. Remember to concave the bottom of the foot or bowl or whatever, so it will only rest on the outside edges. A "flat" bottom will eventually warp with humidity and won't sit flat.

On the box, that a nice first box and I am sure your wife will love it. Only critique is that I can see a few very faint sanding lines. A LOT of those can only be delt with by hand sanding WITH the grain while the lathe is off or it is off the lathe.

Keep it up, your doing very well with your first projects.

The bowls foot is inset about 1/8" it might look uneven because of the high quality printer paper that forms my "white box" for these pictures.

Good call on the sanding lines. I kinda gave up the more I looked at it and stopped with a quick pass of 400 grit paper. The other stuff I usually hit with some 600 and 00 or 0000 steel wool to help randomize the sanding lines before I put the wax on.

Looks like you're coming right along! You have a nice curve to your bowl. The foot option is alot about personal preference, some like a small foot, some big, some short, some tall and some like none at all. My preference is for a shorter foot with a little smaller diameter, I'd say mine usually average between 1/3 to 1/4 of the diameter of the bowl, but I usually just go for what feels right for me. Keep looking at pics until you see a style of foot that you like, then try and copy it.
You did a nice job on the box. If you like boxes on a foot/pedestal, you might think about doing one similar but make the box egg shaped with just a little bit thinner pedestal, I think that might look pretty cool.
You're really improving with each piece you do, just keep turning the forms that you like!

Derek, I think your improvement is remarkable! Vast difference from the first set of turnings, and the important thing is that you seem to have a good eye for curves. One thought on the little box - it would look entirely different were it sitting on a small base of a darker wood that was turned to look as though it were a separate piece.

On the bowls, you may find it easier to visualize the foot, and to turn the foot/base if you use a glued on waste block - just a thought.

And, using beautiful cherry doesn't hurt - Great work!!

Derek, keep up the work, explore your shapes, coming along
