Applying adhesive backed felt?

I need to apply felt to the bottom of some drawers I am building. Is there any need to seal the ply first, or just apply it to raw wood?

I did a jewelry box back in March and didn't worry about finish that got in the drawers but didn't make a particular effort to finish them either and it worked out fine.
