Here is the results of my Sunday afternoon turning. 4 Maple bowls still wet from the alcohol bath. The second from the left was turned end grain. A first for me.

Did you find yourself needing to change your mindset for working on that one (spindle turning and all)?

Yes Dan it turned a good bit different from the othe three. I used a bowl gouge for the other three except for the very bottom of the bowls which I ended up using my hollowing rig for since it would reach that far in. On the end grain one the bowl gouge wouldn't do much of anything on the inside and I ended up using my hollowing rig to hollow it out completely. I don't have a special end grain tool but the hollower seemed to work fine but was slow.

Well - you sure were busy! Nice forms on the bowls! Looking forward to seeing them once finished!

I've been roughing out some endgrain hollow forms and they sure are different when you are used to facegrain!

Saying the end grain one turned differently from the side grain ones might be an understatement. Different worlds entirely, eh?

As an option for end grain bowls ( pand a way to help you spend your money), you might want to consider a Martel hook tool. I have the medium one and just got to using it yesterday. Sweet tool! A bit of a learning curve but not too much when you consider how an edge actually SLICES wood (as opposed to bludgeoning it as a scraper does when hogging). I bought mine directly from Andre when I got my DVR from him this summer.

Thanks all. Got them out of the alcohol last night and wrapped them up. Will be sure to post them as I finish them.
