I have this old German made coping saw and the only markings on it are Germany and 222 in two different places. Anyone know who made it and when? It seems to be in great shape and waiting for me to add a blade to put it into use.

Yes, it is fret saw. There is a tiny stamp on the arm which looks like a joined HK.

A jeweler's saw.

Almost looks like someone filed some notches as an afterthought to accommodate pinned blades.

Joined at the very bottom between the H and the K?

Back in the 50's, when Heckler and Koch was a new company, they didn't make guns. They made parts for things like sewing machines and the like. That may be a saw from their factory or maybe even something they made...they used to make some tools too I think. Can you get a closeup of the stamp?

Yes,those notches were not on any of the jeweler's saws I have ever seen. Good idea, though, but the saw frame seems to be on the verge of being too delicate for coping saw type blades. See how the straight part of the frame has a little bend in it? Those thumb screws are for tightening the saw's jaws on pinless jeweler's saw blades.

Here is the stamp on the cross piece. It is so small I initially thought it was just a depression on the cross piece. I finally got a good photo of it and in all honesty it now looks more like IR.

Coping saw, fret saw, or jewlers saw, three names for one saw depending on where it is and who's using it? I always think of a fret saw as a small back saw, but that's just me.

It is a jeweler's saw, with a jeweler's size stamp on it. Probably about 1/40" high. I have a few older than that one, with better frames, but exactly the same handle.

Good heavens, that really does look like the Heckler and Koch logo.
