Hi all,

Quick question--is anyone using a home air-filter instead of a ceiling mounted one (i.e. something like this http://www.amazon.com/Honeywell-Long-Life-QuietCare-Purifier-17000/dp/B000050AQ5/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1321553644&sr=8-1) in their shop?

The reason I ask is that I often see these types of filters for sale on craigslist for much cheaper than the ceiling mounted ones. Is there a major difference between the two in terms of filtering ability and efficiency?

Thanks,

Noah

i would imagine the difference lies in the amount of air moved, i.e. cfm
and the filtering element.

Keep in mind that an air filter removes the dust from the air AFTER you create it. To capture the dust being created you need a dust collector, probably multiple 4" intakes, and forget about catching the curlies - get a snow shovel.

The difference would be in how long it takes to clean the air. Does it have an automatic (timed) shutoff? You would probably want to leave it running for an hour or so after leaving the shop.
