View Full Version : What cutter for finishing hollow forms

What type of cutter do you prefer when finishing the interior of a hollow form? I do free-hand with a couple homemade tools; a straight bar and a swan neck. I just use a narrow HSS cutter with a rounded tip like an Oland tool. The problem is getting a nice clean, continuous cut along the inside of the form with that kind of narrow tip. I've seen the Hunter carbide tools and the various tips like the multi-faceted Sorby with a varying arc on the curved face.

I know a lot of people just use a standard straight tip, but without an articulated or captured rig it seems pretty hard to get a nice clean cut off of that, Any feedback is appreciated.

I like the large scraper tips that come with the monster system for blending and smoothing the interior walls.

I use a round scraper on a swan neck type tool after hand hollowing, I also have a similiar scraper that fits on my captured system. Light cuts are very important with either.
