I have a stanley rabbet plane. Model 90J or somethingl like that.
On the iron does one sharpen all three sides? At what angle?

Thanks in advance.

John

John,

I think you have a fairly rare plane.......

I've never heard of anyone sharpening more than just the lead square edge...
Most angles are 25 - 30 degrees.....

John,

I have no idea how to sharpen that sucker, but it is apparently pretty rare. http://www.supertool.com/StanleyBG/stan11.htm

DOH!

I forgot I have (the small version of) John Walter's book, Antique & Collectible Stanley Tools 2004 Pocket Price Guide.

According to Walters, a 90J runs from ~$400 in "good" condition to $800+ in mint.

Note that "Good" means

65-85% of finish remaining,
"moderate ... rust & wear,"
only "minor difficulties" such as "owner's initials, nicks, etc."

Gents,

It is indeed a rare plane...but only if it was manufactured in the U S of A. The British ones are a dime a dozen.

As for the angle of the blade, the average angle I've seen on them is 25 degrees...with a bed of about 15 degrees, which gives you an effective attack angle of 40! There's no need to sharpen the sides unless they've been damaged somehow.

This may sound like heresy, but honing a very slight skew into the front edge as above doesn't affect the plane's precision much but aids faster cross and end grain cutting.

20-25 degrees is the usual angle for these.
