I bought a Crown 3/8" bowl gouge some time ago. I also have a 8" grinder and Wolerine jig and Vari-Grind.

After watching in person in January a demo at a WW show, and watching Bill Grumbines DVD, I decided I should try regrinding my bowl gouge........ Bad move on my part.

So I grind and grind and never get it right. So one night I think I'll just put it back to the way it was and at least turn someting......... Bad move #2.

Bottom line is this. I have a tool that I cannot use at all. I either need to buy another one and use it as an example or find a way to learn how to fix the one I have with instruction.

I am looking into local clubs and hope to get hands on help there but so far Waynesboro, VA has a club meeting the third Thursday each month and that is a ways off..... So I post here.

I think I need to cut the end of the bowl gouge off square with a die grinder and start from scratch!

I think I am spinning more than the wood on my lathe now..... Maybe I need to stick with flat work :(

I know this is a BIG request of you guys (and gals) but I think you are up to it.

Ed, contact the listed person for the club to get a referal to someone that is hopefully close to you that can help. Finding a mentor "now" is a good thing--there is no need to wait for the meeting. Being shown things relative to turning and sharpening is worth a thousand SMCs...we can talk to you, but it's difficult to show you something interactively through the Ether... ;)

Ed, Oneway offers a CDROM and a Video with complete instructions on how to use the Wolverine jig and best of all it is free... You can get it from this link
http://www.oneway.ca/forms/multi-media_request.htm

You can also watch it online here

It can be a little intimidating at first... I was fortunate to learn from Bill first hand at my turning lesson... and I still take my time and watch what I am doing real close...

Also recommended is the "Fundamentals of Sharpening" video available from the American Association of Woodturners (AAW) site. Here's the link:

http://www.woodturner.org/products/videos/fundamental_sharp/

This video shows how four different turners sharpen their turning tools and several will be using your same Wolverine Vari-Grind jig. The videos from Oneway are also helpful but can be a long download if you don't have a high-speed connection.

WOW! No flames and no public "you are such a dumb ..."

I have received one PM with a offer to assist me.

I will d/l the online movies and request the additional ones, try again.

When I learn how to do this, I'll be so happy :D

I watched a tape and even a demonstration and that didn't really help. I never did get a decent edge. But when I took a class and the instructor could literally put his hands on mine and say "swing your arms like this..." then it became clear. So I second Jim's response--get a mentor.

I found somebody in a local club who gave me four 2 hour classes for $10. a week! He wasn't a great teacher, just helping out, but he taught me the basics and that's what I wanted. It was a bargain.

I was not able to get this form to work. I filled it out and after clicking on the submit button, I got an error.

I did get all four of the above files to download and with RealPlayer, I was able to watch them, take notes and will give it a try in the shop shortly.

Intimidating at first..... naw..... not me.... I just jumped in and messed it up! Then intimidated, I came to SMC for rescue.

I'll post later today and let everyone who as helped know how I made out. At least I feel better before going to the shop.

It rained all night and now has started to snow so today will be spent in the shop:)

Please keep the snow down there. It's bad enough being oon the Bay and working noon tp midnmite+.

BTW, I screwed up and sent your part to the wrong address. I resent it this morning.

Sorry

Just ribbing you. It will get here when it gets here and I'll install it then. Thank you for letting me know tho.

I drug myself out of bed at the crack of 1105 to have time to get that thing to the post office today!

(I hate this shift and will be glad when refueling is over)

Robert,
Thank you so much. I'll let you know when I receive it.

All others,

I got the gouges sharpened, correctly!

I'll post pictures of what I tested the sharpening job on below.

First time doing this stuff and having a ball.

Now I need to start to work on the skew! So far I have managed to get a LARGE catch and become afraid of that thing. One day, I'll get that too.

Thanks everyone for helping!

When this refueling is over I'm gonna sleep for 2 days and then try mine out myself.

Until then, I'm gonna sit here at work and go not so quietly insane.
