This is a 17.25" maple platter that I turned from the stump of a maple tree that blew down in a storm last winter. Lots of figure in the wood. It stands about 3" tall.

Nice work, I like your platter. That wood is great. Has a 3D effect with all the figure.

Nice platter and the wood is pretty cool.

Now that is a handsome platter. The chatoyancy really shows well, and the dark bits really add interest. Like Scott said, the 3D effect is great - the rim looks like it is wavy, but on closer inspection it looks really smooth.

Sparky, nice job. Did you turn it green first ? How thick did you leave it and how long to dry. I am working on a batch of platters and was wondering how others are doing. Thanks Ian

Thanks all! It really does have a LOT of figure in the wood, more than the picture even shows. To answer some of the questions it is finished with wipe on poly about 7 or 8 coats and then buffed. Yes I do have a few more blanks from that tree. The trunk was very short before it branched out into several trunks and there was rot in most of them but I did get 6 large blanks. Not all have as much figure as this one as it was from the very bottom but they are nice. I have a large hollow form roughed out of one of them that is drying right now. I did turn it green right after I cut the blank and left it about 1 1/2 thick. Put it in DNA and then let it sit for about 10 months before I got around to finishing it up. I will post the hollow form when I get it done. I did a little bit smaller one not long ago that came out of this same tree and posted it here.

Really beautiful. I wish I could see all that figure in person. I love those brown inclusions you can get in maple.

The inside form of the platter is also very pleasing to my eye.
