I got a lot of input on the cabinet before I built it from people on this thread, now I have a nice cabinet and 1 less excuse to not be turning nice things.http://www.sawmillcreek.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=212518&d=1320897061htt p://www.sawmillcreek.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=212517&d=1320897049htt p://www.sawmillcreek.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=212516&d=1320897038htt p://www.sawmillcreek.org/attachment.php?attachmentid=212515&d=1320897027

I ordered 20 18" full extension medium duty (70#) drawer guides from glide right, and am very pleased with them. They came out to about 4$ per pair shipped, much better than any local prices, and much nicer than the 3/4" extension cheap glides you can get locally for 4$ a pair.

The drawer slots are variable from either the left to right, or front to back orientation on the top two wide drawers. The 3 top shallow drawers in the middle also have front to back divider slots if i need to. I still have yet to put handles on the doors/drawers, but will make some to match all of the other handles on all of the other garage cabinets.

That's a fine looking lathe and a fine looking cabinet underneath it. I'd kill for some organization like that. Until I get around to it...stacking my tools on top of my wood and my wood on top of my tools will have to suffice.

V-e-r-y Nice!!! and a nice shop too! Not too sure about the doors in front of drawers, but if it is items you dont use much, it should keep them cleaner.

I obsessively clean after each turning...

I have a big gulp hood I want to mount on the backside of the cabinet with some sort of adjustable arm mechanism which I can use to move/fix the location of the hood relative to the turning. The other issue is running a dust collection pipe across the room. The overhead on the ceiling has the attic access in the way, so I would have to run piping a long way around the shop to get it over there, but I think it is something i will need to do.

Another task will be some lighting for over the lathe. I need better worklight. I should find a worklight for the shop that I can mount on the back of the cabinet over the lathe, or move to over my workbench for carving.

You're going to really like having everything so close at hand.

Thom,
The thought behind the drawers behind doors was that I originally wanted shelves on the lower levels, but after input from the creekers here they almost all suggested drawers. Another concern was dust getting in the drawers, which a common door will help keep out. Plus, I had extra 1/4" walnut ply to use, and didn't want to use too much maple for drawer fronts.

That looks like it will fit my lathe just fine. Send it to me. I'll pay shipping (grin).
More info on your source for the drawer guides please.

Bill,
Here is a link to the drawer guides I used (http://glideritehardware.mybigcommerce.com/categories/70-lb.-Side-Mount-Ball-Bearing-Drawer-Slides/)

18", full extension 70# rating, a box of 20 cost $56, plus another $30 for shipping which came out to be about $4.50 per pair. Please note screws were not included. I am very happy with them. I was leary they were going to be low quality due to the low price, but they work just as well as the full extension accuride you can get from Borg/Woodcraft/Rockler.

Also, the board the grinder is mounted on is secured to the bench with a bolt that goes into a threaded insert in the bench top. It is snugged up against the topframe on two sides, and bolted down on the opposite corner. You can kind of see this bolt in the third picture. It looks like a penny laying on the board.

The maple frame on the top is also made to stick up about 1/4" from the top to prevent any tools from rolling off.

We'll see how long that lasts...

Really like the cabinet and the lathe Alex.

The size of the cabinet and the drawer layout look just perfect for that lathe.

Good that you made the drawers to have adjustable dividers, Sure that would be helpful to keep things organized.
