Hopi emerged from below, Masaw, ordered them to travel in the four cardinal directions until they reached the sea and then retrace their steps to find their homeland. This trek is commemorated in rock carvings. These rock memorials feature two spiral motifs. (1)square spirals to symbolize the turning back at the seas (2)round spirals, to show how the people wandered ever closer to their destination.

Charlie, one could never find out, but it would still be fascinating to know how the original artists might interpret the work you are doing.

i would like to visit the Hopi of today, i wonder myself what they would think of my turnings
