This is the bowl that I had posted about earlier http://www.sawmillcreek.org/showthread.php?175102-Another-work-in-progress it is now finished.
Measures 14 3/4"w x 6 5/8"h the thickness of the walls is 7/8" and the finish is several coats of wipe on poly.
The walls are purposely thick so that I could retain some of the voids in the outer wall without them going clear through the piece.
This was turned from an onion type burl that was actually a healing growth over three different branches that had been broken off when the tree was still young, from the previous post you can see pictures of this. The shape of the bowl still retains the outer profile of this onion burl, or at least as close to it as was possible.

Looks great John. The finish has quite the shine and shows off the grain well!

Michelle, that wasn't an onion pun was it? ;) (appealing...)

John, that looks great. Do you have a use for it in mind? Oh, and pardon my ignorance, but what is an onion burl?

Yeah I remembered the post all on my own! Sure turned out to be a pretty finished piece.

Thanks for all the comments everyone.
Mike, an union burl is a growth on the tree that is generally like a large "pimple" or half round with a smoother outer surface. The inner grain pattern can be quite plain as the grain is somewhat like the layers of an onion. Often these are formed when the tree self heals itself as was the case with this piece. If you look at my previous post you will see that the finished bowl matches the shape of the burl.

Great turning, great wood and GREAT finish! That is a really nice bowl. I prefer some heft to a larger bowl and this one looks just right.

That is such a cool bowl John!!! I love the size, the utility but graceful look, the rim doesn't take away from the character of the wood. You could put it on a shelf with a light on it and it would look like art!

Nice work. I really like the wood. I have trouble finding nice grain in maple, most of it is plain. The finish is really good. I do prefer a more rounded rim, but this one looks nice.
