As much as the vortex pulled me in initially, I have wide ranging woodworking interests from chairmaking to marquetry to regular old cabinet making and beyond so my shop time gets split up a bit these days. I still really love to turn and to turn bowls especially. I had promised one to a friend, and when she was over the other day, I let her pick from a handful of rough outs that were ready to be re-turned. She chose a nice local walnut (grew within a couple miles of my house)that was certainly promising but hard to see rough and covered with anchorseal. It had been drying since last February. Here's the result - 13.5 x 5 inches - finished with my usual walnut oil and beeswax. Thanks for looking.

That is a pretty piece of walnut. Nice shape with the lip, too!

I'm sure the recipient will be very pleased!

Gorgeous bowl, Shawn! That walnut looks fantastic. Am I confused or is the pith running through the sides of that bowl?

First, thanks to everyone for the kind words! You all are very nice!

Matt, there is no pith. I cut this myself in the usual manner - slicing outside the pith. The grain orientation is such that the inside of the treee is at the rim of this bowl - the bullseye patterns are teh growth rings in the sapwood - maybe that's what you are seeing?

great bowl Sean..she's lucky to have it. I agree with your description of your woodworking. i have done as you..there is little in woodworking that does not fascinate, and I want to try. Not good at everything, but it sure is fun

You've got to love that walnut. You have done it justice and created quite a nice bowl. Good job.

Looks like your friend has good taste and perhaps x-ray vision as she chose a lovely blank for you to work you magic on. Your contribution is pretty OK as well (the understatement of the day). She should be thrilled with the gift.

Great form and wood character. You better make sure you can get possession of the rest of that tree!!!!
