When I visited Kathy in Az, she wanted to load me up with wood. The problem was that I flew out there and didn't have much room. I did take one stick 7/8"x 1 1/4" x 12" long of African Sumac. That fit in my suitcase. I really wanted to make something from this so here's the start.

For those of you that don't know, African Sumac turns a pretty bright red when left in the sun so it should make some pretty Christmas Ornaments. I ended up getting two out of the stick but they will be relatively small. They should finish at about 5" tall by 1 3/4". Thanks for looking and C&C welcome.

That's pretty cool Ed! I would never have thought to segment it! Can't wait to see how they look once they've reddened up!

I finished them up today. Now all they have to do is turn red in the sunlight. Inspired by Scott Hackler, I tried to make some small finials.

Really cool Ed! Would never have thought you could get one of those out of that tiny stick let alone two.

BTW what is the white wood, holly, or is it acrylic?

Nice job on the finials Ed! and I like the way you use a cord to hang them. Can't wait to see how red they turn!

James,
The white wood is Holly. It wasn't quite dry apparently because after I sprayed one of the finials with laquer, it began to bend. I had to bend it back while it was still in the lathe and hold it for a while till the finish dried. After that, it seemed to be ok.
