I bought what I was led to believe was a banjo from a 3520 along with the extension post . It arrived on Friday and besides having difficulty even moving the box it came in ,when I got it out it was huge. It measures a tad over 30 1/2" long and the tool post hole is centered on the casting. It does not seem to be the 3520 banjo and might possibly be off a 42/24 instead. My project was to use it in a outboard turning setup that I am fabbing. If I do use it I will need to cut it down in size ,machine it for the endcap.etc etc and I'm not sure that is the right thing to do. Is this banjo worth more as it is and go find an actual 3520 banjo and use it.My lathe is a 16/42 and this thing is more like a bed extension than a banjo. The clamping washer for under the bed is an inch too big to even go through the opening in the end of my bed.Any thoughts on the subject? Look forward to the idea's.

That banjo is not made like the ones I have seen for the 3520b.......the ones for the 3520b have a slot in the side to accept a vacuum attachment. This may be the old style that came off a 3520A..............not for sure.

My 4224 banjo is 17.5" long. How long is a normal 3520 banjo?

Ted ,
I'm not sure but it cannot be close to what this thing is.Your 4224 banjo is 17 or 18" lond and this is another foot longer. It and the extension post was in a box that weighed over 60 pounds. I'm welding up an outboard bed for off the end of my 16/42 and I'll have to add legs hefty enough to support the banjo and the stresses caused by the tool post downword force. Is it off a PM 90? I looked at it when I took the pictures and I do not think I can even cut it shorter. The eccentric cam is heat pressed on the shaft after it was installed through the casting so it cannot be removed to shorten.Throw me some idea's

Greg...... I went to the shop and measured the banjo on my PM3520B. It's 19" long and the hole for the tool rest is offset on the headstock side of the banjo.

Ken,
Thanx for the info, I knew it was smaller than this behemoth .And the offset was something that they,PM ,mention in the sales brochure as being advantagious for some reason or another. What lathe was shipped with a 30 inch+ banjo?

The hole on my 4224 is centered like that one. Logically, you would think the length of a banjo would be a function of the size of the largest over the bed turning the lathe was capable of, plus a little more for slanting the banjo when needed. If that premise is true, it implies the banjo was for a larger lathe? Anyways, if it doesn't work out for you I'm looking for another banjo :)

They make a bed extension to bolt on the out board end of a 4224. I'll bet you got the banjo for that bed extension. Would probably be able to turn well over 36" diameter on that.

No, it's certainly not for a PM 90.

Greg,

I don't have a clue. I have the bed extension for the PM3520B and the tool rest extension. The bed extension goes either at the same level as the bed to give you 53" length capacity or it bolts to a lower position so you can move the headstock and turn 30" in diameter. The tool rest extension is basically a piece of pipe with a locking handle that extends the tool rest hole in the original banjo vertically about 8" I'd guess. Thus the tool rest is raised higher but you still use the original banjo.

I figured I'd give this a bump. Maybe somebody on here today would know what PM lathe had a 30 inch+ banjo on it. If no info surfaces ,I will probably call PM tomorrow.

Greg...you might try the OWWM forum too. If it came off an old tool, they might know.

The banjo on the outboard side of my Oneway 2436 is 25" long and 17" tall. That is for a 48" diameter swing.

Looks like Powermatic P/N 6295857 Tool Support Base for the 4224 outboard Assenbly.

If you do a Google search for"Powermatic/Jet Outboard Lathe Bracket & Banjo" you can see a banjo just like this one for sale on Ebay. It is being advertised as being used for huge outboard projects.

I'm with David on this one...that is NOT from a PM90. PM90 was a 12" lathe without a swiveling head. There is NO need for a banjo that long on a PM90.

James,
I bought the one on ebay and I will vouch for the huge outboard projects. If I ever had a catch it might tip my lathe over.

Sid,
Thanx, that looks like the piece I have. Just alittle bit of overkill for my needs.I hate to modify this one .Hopefully somebody could use this one as is.
