I guess it's that time of year again, and seeing all of the cool ornaments that have been posted made me want to get going on a few (I gave one to my mom and each of my sisters last year, and I think I'll continue it as a tradition).
I turned this one from some of the leftover black limba that I turned the pepper mill from. I thought the grain and color might be interesting. It's not very big, the globe is about 1 1/2" x 1 1/4" and overall is about 4 1/4" Finish is just a touch of BLO and several coats of spray lacquer. The icicle is maple dyed black with a sharpie and a few coats of lacquer.
Hollowed to under 1/8" (hard to measure, but it's light) with my allen wrench tools (the bigger one to get the bulk and the smaller one to get the shoulder area).

I need to pick up some small eye hooks so I can hang it, in the meantime, just tilt your head to the left and pretend it's hanging vertically

Thanks for looking!
Comments and critiques are welcome.

Jeez, Kathy, How long have you been turning? You seem to have mastered just about everything!

Great job, I really like it!

Looks good.
Gonna have to give the black sharpie trick a try some day.

Kathy,

When you say allen wrench tools, is that a reference to a particular type of purchased tool(s) or tools that you made from allen wrenches?

These are tools that I made from allen wrenches. The smaller one is from a 3/32" wrench and the bigger is maybe 1/4" or 5/16", can't remember. The bigger one was bent to a better angle (similar to the smaller one) after this pic was taken. I found a set of long handled allen wrenches so I could put plenty of length in the handle.

I like it..my head is slanted off my neck anyway so it's no problem for me to see it dead on...

Great looking ornament Kathy. Sharpies work great.

Sharpies are NOT permanent. They fade badly over time! If you want permanent look the black dyes.

Very nice Kathy! The ornate designs are flashy, but they are no prettier than this one!
