And making a New Yankee style blanket chest out of them. Other than a bunch of black nail holes, wood seems to be fairly nice, for oak. In the pictures, you'll see some dark wood, and some lighter wood. The dark is what's left after a trip through the planer ( or three), the light is what is in the inside. A picture or two of where I'm at right now:211986211987211988I just got the top into the clamps, the squeeze out with be taken off later, there will be a bread board edge to the top.211989211990a look at the "plan" I'm going by. That's about all I need to make something. Just playing around...

Looks like white oak to me. Those were rafters, like from your house?

An old garage that was torn down( before it fell down) One 2x8 "joist" turned out to be Black Cherry. Still have a full pickup truck load to go and pick up. This site also has some 6x6s and bigger. A couple of the collar ties were also cherry. All I pay for is the gas to go and get them. About a 10 mile round trip.

I love working with reclaimed stuff, and try not to "hide" the character of the wood. Just my preference, but I think it adds some heritage to the new piece.
Good work and design.

Is it my imagination or was there a link to a sawmill site on this thread before today?

Looks great. I like the nail holes. Adds character.

I guess I'm the "saw mil", in that I am resawing all the free wood down to something I can use. Still trying to figure out HOW to cut a couple of 6x6 beams down to my sizes. There is also a big pile of Doug. Fir siding boards at the site.
