About six inches. Maple with cherry strips glued in a cherry lid and a maple finial. The lip at the top was challenging for me. I got to use my new Sorby hollowing tool. :)

Nice... first thing I thought of was that you could consider this a segmented piece! It is going to look pretty cool in a couple of years when all that Cherry darkens!

Really nice Betty. It will get better with age.

Nice candy dish Betty! I like the wood combo, nice curl in that maple, and as Steve said, it will only get better with age!

You got a lot packed in this little piece..some segmenting, finial work, some hollowing with a new tool, good finishing work, and a useful item to store your m&m's... Good job!

Thanks for all the positive comments. :) I was wondering if the finial would look better in a darker color or if it's too big. I know the top is too round for the form but the blank shape was insufficient to make anything but a donut. This probably would have looked better without a lid but with a dark circle around the opening. I'll have to find a larger piece of maple and make a rounder shape next time. I got to try lotsa new stuff and that was the point. :)

Lots of new experiences in one little package! Making something useful makes it even better!
