Like a lot of us I have often wondered about the numbers stamped on various parts of Stanley planes, seemingly randomly. I have a WW2 #3 that I am restoring and on the back of the blade is the number 445
finely stamped. Any idea what this means? Is a blade type, run, mean 4th quarter of 1945 or what?
thanks ...Brian

Your last guess is correct. Stanley stamped the quarter and year from late 30's through WWII. Couldn't say why.

I'm not sure if this link will work (someone please tell me if it doesn't; my computer will think it does because it's got the cookie already), but if it does, it's a good article on the subject: http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_qa3983/is_200112/ai_n9015402/?tag=content;col1
