The new issue of Shopnotes has a cool looking bench vise plan. Anyone seen it yet and have an opinion of the design? The issue also has a plan for Sharpening tray, Dovetail tool tote, Tips on using a Brace and Hand Drill.

Interesting! My dad subscribes to that, I'll have to swing by the house and take a look!

I like that idea. Takes up less room than a Moxon twin screw or a bench on a bench while giving the height. Thanks for posting.

I like how they went about gussying up the show end of of metal bench screw - I might have to have a go a this for the leg vise on my bench.

I use a small modified sawhorse kinda thing for doing hand tool work. Always wanted to work somekind of vice on it. This looks to be the ticket. BTW- I got this issue at Lowe's.

Only thing is that this one won't give much depth for dovetailing... :(

Sort of looks like a Leg vise from the pictures. I'll have to go pick that issue up, looks like a fun idea to play with.

In my eyes this looks like a leg vise that is set higher than the benchtop. Also it looks like the lower guide has been replaced by another screw. Bill Rittner has shown something very similar here

Looks pretty good for holding smaller, curved items. Like this one, altho without the swivel functionality http://www.japanwoodworker.com/product.asp?s=JapanWoodworker&pf_id=99.097&dept_id=13149

With some wide jaws, it would make a nice saw sharpening vise!

This looks like a modern application of an old vice called an "Etaux".

As usual, the Schwarz blogged about it earlier this year.

I have been thinking about building something similar since I bought a wood thread kit.

Think yopu nailed it. That Shopnotes vise has to be based on that one. Wouldn't have killed them to mention that "fact".

So you are implying that I should actually read the article and not just look at the pictures? Next thing you'll say is I shouldn't waste 20 minutes to an hour each issue trying to figure put which user tip won the prize...

I picked up the issue today while running errands, I haven't had a chance to really read the article, but I think I might try and adapt their handle design to a leg vise for my new bench - I'm just not a huge fan of their use of a cotter pin as a garter to keep the jaw connected to the front of the vise screw. I'll have to look at it a little closer, I guess . . . I just think it's a more attractive looking (hey, my bench is going to be in the "living areas" of the house . . .) solution than using a cheap metal tail vise screw, but cheaper than going with a large wooden screw. (Which I'd really prefer) I wonder if I can find an acme screw with a "slot" for mounting a traditional garter. . . .
