I have a Brother HL-2040 printer and recently when its powered on it does not do its usual routine. Instead it makes a little clunk noise and the drum light comes on rather than the ready-to-go green OK light. Any ideas on what may be at fault? I noticed the toner cartridge roller is very difficult to turn. Or should i just scrap it and buy a new one?

How old is the toner cartridge? In the past did you just replace the toner cartridge or toner and drum? A new cartrifdge would be cheaper than a new printer. Our HL 2040 has been flawless since we got it.

Not that much cheaper. A new toner cartridge is $45 at Amazon and an HL-2240 printer is $90. The newer printer uses a different cartridge so if you buy one to try and that doesn't fix it you are out of luck.

After fiddling with it for a bit I went and bought the newer version of this model the HL-2240 for a little over $100. Considering the drum is between $75 and $100 plus a new toner cartridge its about the same money. My HL-2040 was at least 6 years old.

Chuck, just wondering why you didn't go with the 2270DW. Seems the same as the 2240 but with wireless and duplex. ( I just bought one Friday on sale for 99.00 and wondering if I made a mistake ? )

I would have bought the 2270 if I had found one on sale...but I really needed a printer and the 2240 was it. It seems to work well.
