Got this wood from a neighbor again. He says hackberry. No leaf pictures, but could get some dead leaves maybe. Turned a quick bowl from it yesterday. Good turning properties. Harder than elm, but still softer than oak, etc.

Any ideas?211324211325211326

I can't be much help, Tom...but neither that wood or bark looks like any hackberry I've seen.

Doesn't mulberry have always have berrys? You realize I'm going to have to sand the bottom and relabel it?

Thanks guys. Looks like the consensus is mulberry. The neighbor who said it was hackberry was down this morning and said "you know, that looks like hackberry right there". The tree he was referring to was totally different than this one.

Definitely not Hackberry. Mulberry is more like it and mulberry will not always produce fruit. I think they have to be wind pollenated by another mulberry tree, but I am not 100% on this.

Here is a picture of Hackberry bark 211345

Not to confuse things, but the wood reminds me a bit of soapberry... I'm not good with bark.

Definitely not hackberry. That is one tree that is pretty unmistakable if you can see the bark; yours is NOT hackberry. I'd say not mulberry either, as I've turned dozens of mulberry bowls, and yours is nowhere near the grain or color of either red or white mulberry. As far as what it is, I have no idea.

I'm guessing sourwood.

Tom have to agree it is not hackberry. Looks like mulberry to me and no not all mulberry has berries at least around here some don't have berries.
