Anyone else notice that the Ray Iles mortice chisels have been out of stock at TFWW for quite some time? Is something wrong?

No worries - it's just your classic production hick-up. Mortise chisels will be back soon.

Oh man, if those go out of production before I buy them, I'm really going to be kicking myself.

Onto the Christmas list they go.

I've got a few. I don't want to sell them but I MIGHT consider a trade for a nice 5 1/2. or luthiery tools.

That is exactly what I was hoping for. I'm living in India for a temporary job assignment and having to get my woodworking vicariously through the forum and by drooling over tools. These are on my list, maybe for Christmas, and I have been watching and watching. Thanks for the info!

I spoke with Ray Iles this AM. 1/2" left for the US today. he's now working on other sizes to get us caught up.

Joel,

Thanks for the update! I've been looking at the 5/16 for a while...almost got the Narex, but I will wait for the Ray Iles now.

My guess is that Joel's business (and subsequent availability of stock) is seasonal. For some reason, Fall is big on tool and lumber sales, summer not so much. That's one reason why the big antique tool auctions are in October.

I want to purchase the 1/4 and 5/16" mortise chisels...I see they are out of stock...anyone know if a new batch is coming through? Do you need to pre-order?

Go ahead and order. Joel will put you in the queue, and as soon (literally) as they come in, he'll have them on their way to you. (Have done this a couple of times....)

I see TFWW has 5/16" chisels in stock so I ordered one today...actually a good compromise between the 1/4 and 3/8" ;)

I know they were completely out when I ordered in early Dec; I got the 1/4 and 3/8 a couple weeks later, but I'm still waiting (patiently yet eagerly) for my 1/2".

A very useful size in a nice quality chisel. My 5/16th is the only one of the blob of them I acquired that has seen any appreciable service. I can keep it in shape nearly indefinitely wiping the bevel 5 times on an 8000 grit stone after each mortise (which is right beside my bench, anyway) - it's such a pleasure to use a good tool like that that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to buy.

For more context, earlier this year I ordered several sizes which were back ordered. I think it took 3 or 4 months to fulfill my order as the various sizes dribbled in. It appears these chisels are real popular but in the end well worth the wait.

Jim, couldn't agree more. Got my 1/2" a week or so ago, and am very eagerly awaiting the bench build so I can use it. I think I could hit this thing with an 8lb sledge and not make it flinch, I'm loving these things. :)
