Recently acquired a couple of Nova Midi chucks (tommy bar style). Was curious whether there is a proper way to remove them from the lathe spindle? Specifically, when breaking the chuck loose from the spindle should the tommy bar be in one of the body holes, as opposed to one of the scroll holes?

Thanks,
Philip

YES you always want to use the solid body hole to remove the chuck. If you use the scroll hole you take a chance on jambing the scroll.

When I need to use the tommy bar to break loose the chuck, I use the holes in the body of the chuck. Using the other ones causes the jaws to completely open or close before applying pressue to unscrew the chuck. Just don't like to take the extra time to spin the jaws completely open or closed. Also, using the scroll mechanism to break the chuck loose just seems like it would put a strain on the mechanism that it doesn't need.

make sure it is the holeway in so you dont round over the holes.
