I had two of these roughed out but turned one of them into a funnel. This one came nice though. I had bored a 1-1/2" hole all the way though after roughing out to remove the pith. The bottom now has a contrasting plug (Dalmata) about 2" dia.
The piece is 11" tall x 9-1/2" dia, finished with lacquer.
Comments and Critiques welcome

Another fine job, as expected. The form and color catch your eye. What is Dalmata? That does not sound like an East Texas wood.

Very nice shape on this one - and, there appears to be some striking Ambrosia stain in the wood! Adds a lot of character.

Dennis,
Good call on drilling it all the way through. Great form, and you captured the Red flame perfectly for an end grain turning. Well Done.

Wonderful looking piece. I like the small detail on the collar. I've never had a chance to turn Box Elder. It looks like it finishes up beautifully.

Dennis,

Gorgeous wood, classy work. I also really like the detail at the collar, perfect shadow line for some contrast.

Love the shape. Ugly wood though.

Ha, just kidding. Your vase came from my patch. Bob just called & gave me a heads-up about this thread. I have almost as much fun felling the trees & milling the logs as you guys do turning them. Whenever I drop a tree and see that start burst pattern my heart still goes pitter-patter. It never gets old.

I need to get a bigger lathe so I can try making stuff that gorgeous one day. You guys would kill for a patch of flame boxelder like I have & I would love to have the talent some of y'all have. Too bad talent can't be suddenly imparted or someone would have a pallet of this stuff in their driveway the next day. :)
